Memorial Park Streetscape Improvements
Five micro-bioretention facilities and new storm drainage that addressed decades of flooding on Rhode Island Avenue.
The block had lived with flooding for decades. The fix was not a bigger pipe. It was a stormwater system designed to hold water where it falls, and a park built on top of it.
Description of services
The primary focus was stormwater management improvements. The work included construction of five micro-bioretention facilities and installation of new reinforced concrete pipes and inlets to help manage stormwater and address decades of flooding. Infrastructure work also included new sidewalks, street, inlets, landscaping and a new park.
Enhanced outcomes
Improved and sustainable infrastructure that manages stormwater more efficiently, including a new park area with amenities that serve the community. The ribbon cutting brought out the block, the city and the businesses on the avenue.
Public work, public scrutiny
Municipal infrastructure is delivered in front of the people who live with the result. Procurement, prevailing wage and DBE participation requirements all applied, and the schedule was read out at council meetings. Usource is DDOT and MDOT certified for exactly this class of work.
