An arts district is judged from the sidewalk. The City of Mount Rainier set out to make the retail it already had look like somewhere worth stopping, and the work went storefront by storefront — more than a dozen of them — while the businesses stayed open.
Description of services
Facade improvements to more than a dozen existing retail storefronts in the Mount Rainier Arts District, Maryland, delivered for the City of Mount Rainier. The purpose was revitalization rather than replacement: enhancing and beautifying the storefronts the corridor already had, so the street reads as cared for and the businesses behind it become easier to walk into. Site signage carried the message that mattered most to the merchants: Enhancing the viability of Mount Rainier. Businesses are OPEN.
Enhanced outcomes
Restored and painted facades, improved storefronts and new signage along a district that now presents as a place rather than a row of buildings. For a small city, the front of the main street is the economic development strategy.
Public work, occupied buildings
Every one of the storefronts had a tenant with a business to run. Sequencing, scaffolding, access and hours were negotiated shopfront by shopfront. Usource is DDOT and MDOT certified and has delivered municipal streetscape and infrastructure work for Mount Rainier before.
